Michael & Bonnie Photo about us_edited_edited_edited.jpg

Bonnie Lawrence is a Melbourne based fashion artist. For over 30 years she has specialized in creating designer & couture gowns, often evoking a diaphanous, nymph like fragility with a timeless yet modern mood; and with total femininity. Throughout this time Bonnie has employed decorative surface & hand dyeing methods in her art wear fashions, bridal wear & fibre art creations.

In the early 80's, Bonnie launched late into a life of fashion, after leaving a 20 year nursing career behind, to fulfil her childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer. On completion of her studies for a "Diploma of Arts in Fashion", at RMIT, she graduated with distinction; & received two awards, one for her art work; & one for outstanding garment design. The awards encouraged her to begin selling her art wear fashions freelance, through retail as an independent designer; and from 2002, Bonnie and her partner Michael, eventually specialized in luxury occasion & bridal couture, through their showrooms in Kew East & Camberwell.

Throughout her fashion career, Bonnie's works have been exhibited around Australia & overseas, she's taught dressmaking, silk art & decorative surface techniques; & wearable art programs to adults; & now shares her expertise through the launch of this mesh work making series.

Currently Bonnie creates unique, one-of-a-kind art wear for retail; & continues to research & trial new yarn art construction methods, to make-up her mesh work fashions & fibre art creations.

Bonnie & Michael live in Camberwell, Victoria. They met through their love of disco dancing in the early 80's; and have been dancing together ever since.

As a duo, Michael & Bonnie have collaborated often with many creative initiatives. These include running & marketing of retail enterprises, such as occasion & bridal wear & online bridal stores. They've travelled far & wide in Australia; & to London, Paris & Hawaii on marketing expeditions together, to launch their new products.

Researching & developing construction tools, production methods for new ways of working with yarn; & for making-up mesh work & felted woven fabric forms; & the writing of this six part series about these findings, are their most recent collaborations over the last 12 years.

With their mutual appreciation for the joy that comes through creativity, Bonnie & Michael both hope that you'll have long lasting enjoyment, while using the mesh work making methods & tools, as described throughout this six part series. We hope that you'll be delighted while handcrafting your own mesh work threads, into beautiful works of art in fibre.

An eBook Series About Yarn Art:

This mesh work fashion craft website brings together six volumes in eBook form, about new ways of working creatively with yarn and fibre, as a means to construct fabrics, fashions and yarn art. By using a novel loom base system as a foundation for construction, creatives can easily use their favourite yarn or fibre to produce fabric forms & fashion styles in any size or shape, as desired. We decided to call this loom base concept, the "Loom Template Construction System". The interpreted mesh work projects presented within this series, evidences an experimental approach to yarn art. Through combining this experimental use of yarn with colour ways and patterning, the innovated loom base equipment can be employed as a personalized, loom craft tool kit, to design, string & stitch, one-of-a-kind mesh work initiatives all your own, to add cheer to your wardrobe with fibre art-to-wear, or to your home with sumptuous, soft furnishings and fibre art projects, for any time of year.

In Volume One you'll find a fully illustrated introduction to this novel handcraft

development we call, "Mesh Work Making". Exciting new ways of working with yarn

are explored, to provide the means for the maker to start constructing stunning fabric forms for fashion styles & yarn art wear, or for soft furnishings, wall art & homewares. This first eBook has instructions  for using yarn to make-up items varying from small broach accessories, crop tops, longer tops or dresses, to larger shawls, throws & wall hangings, employing a flexible, interlocking, modular type apparatus, innovated for construction, which we call the, "Loom Template Construction System". These breakthrough construction methods are easy to learn, and the instructions easy to follow. By deploying the supportive loom base equipment, the scope for using yarn to construct open weave, mesh like fabric forms is enabled; & whichever yarn is strung, whether a delicate whisper or chunky & thick, you'll find that all the sizes and shapes of these hand loomed constructions, whether large or small, will all correspond to the 3D shapes and sizes, of the foundation loom base templates that you've assembled and configured, all according to your own design. Moreover, your choice of yarn colour, can echo a bright & breezy, moody or neutral palette, to express your own unique chromatic flair. From go to show, we're sure that you'll be absolutely delighted, once you see how vibrant the colour drenched mesh work networks can look; and be thrilled as well by how rapidly your yarn art fabric forms and fashion shapes can grow.

In Volume Two and Volume Three you'll find two different methods for how to customize loom templates, to introduce customized loom base shaping and sizing methods, to construct thereon, corresponding mesh work shapes, a "Shape it to then Make it" concept. Instructions for making-up mesh work fashion styles with varying neckline shapes and centre front openings for vests and tops; and shaping for various fashion styles can be found, for constructing yarn garments to fit any size or shape.

In Volume Four we show you how to convert a foundation loom base to a, texturized

"felting loom system", as a means to construct felted woven, fabric forms and fashions styled in wool. (Although these methods may be more challenging for people who have not made felt before, the instructions will however, still assist felt making beginners). We call our constructed felted, woven structures, "Felt-O-Luxxe". Instructions for how to make your own texturized rolling tools and how to construct felted woven vests, dresses and coats can be found in this volume; and more.

Volume Five is all about using dyes to colour yarn art projects. Methods for directly

hand painting natural yarn fibres, whilst a yarn project is still re-movably attached to a loom base are shown. Methods for hand dyeing natural or synthetic yarns and fibres, by implementing hand dyeing immersion techniques, to colour yarns for mesh work making, before or after construction, are also illustrated. Instructions for making up the suitable dyes and constructing and colouring tops, dresses and coats are described. Get your colour wheels on for this one and enjoy the ride!

Volume Six is an, "Instruction Guide", companion, which can be employed along with the other five volumes. This volume illustrates the stringing & stabilizing methods we most like to use; and loom template diagrams & much more. This guide is especially useful when first making-up the mesh work starter projects, found in Volume One, so that you might then more easily construct your first and simpler items to adorn or to decorate.

Essentially, from the visually exciting projects put forward within this series, we hope to inspire your own imaginative, fashionisti possibilities for making-up mesh work fashion styles in yarn, wool, wool rovings or silk fibre, so that you might then wear these gorgeous yarn art originals out, to any kind of event.

Whether your a minimalist, elaborate embellisher, yarn art beginner; or an experienced fibre art creative, by using the, "loom template construction system", as a new creative resource, you'll discover how craft & fashion collide in a wonderous yarn art kaleidoscope of colour & texture. We're certain too, that you'll be fascinated by the variant & decorative hand craft features that these breakthrough mesh work construction methods; and loom base, "shape-it-to-then-make-it" concepts, can provide. As making our "slow-fashion-fast" is what we love to do; & so from inspiration to mesh work creation, we do hope that you will do too!

For more information about the fully illustrated topics covered in each volume, you can find a description on the back cover of each volume, displayed in the "eBook Shop".
